TIP: Caring for your Carabiners
Posted by Keren Warner on
Carabiners really "carry that weight a long time" and it is a good idea to inspect them regularly and replace them when any of the following is noted:
- Cracks
- Sharp edges or burrs
- Bent or malfunctioning gate
- Obvious wear
- Corrosion
- Hairline cracks
- If dropped from a height of 1 meter or more
Clean carabiners by:
- Brushing or blowing off any obvious dirt
- Wash in warm soapy water, rinse and dry thoroughly
- Apply a small drop of synthetic oil or dry graphite to the hinge and locking mechanisms
- Wipe off excess lube
- Store in a dry environment
Properly cared for, your carabiner should last many years.
*As always, follow your manufacturers recommendations.
