TIP: Caring for your Carabiners

Posted by Keren Warner on

Carabiners really "carry that weight a long time" and it is a good idea to inspect them regularly and replace them when any of the following is noted:
  • Cracks
  • Sharp edges or burrs
  • Bent or malfunctioning gate
  • Obvious wear
  • Corrosion
  • Hairline cracks
  • If dropped from a height of 1 meter or more
 Clean carabiners by:
  • Brushing or blowing off any obvious dirt
  • Wash in warm soapy water, rinse and dry thoroughly
  • Apply a small drop of synthetic oil or dry graphite to the hinge and locking mechanisms
  • Wipe off excess lube
  • Store in a dry environment
Properly cared for, your carabiner should last many years.
*As always, follow your manufacturers recommendations.
